Comer Makes Stop in Madisonville While on Gubernatorial Primary Campaign Trail

gov MADISONVILLE, KY (2/25/15) ― About 100 residents from around Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties attended a meet and greet for Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer, who is one of four Republican candidates vying for the top spot in the next governor’s race.

Comer and some of his campaign team members stopped in Madisonville Wednesday evening to shake hands and speak with guests inside the Eddie Ballard Convention Center.

“I want to thank the people for coming out even though there is a UK ballgame on right now,” he said. “Very few people vote in the primary, but you can help me spread the word in how to get Kentucky competitive again.”

Carol Ligon, chairwoman of the Hopkins County Republican Party, said she was pleased with the turnout. She said the local party plans to host the other candidates, Hal Heiner and Matt Bevin of Louisville along with Will T. Scott of Pikeville, who will also be competing in the Republican Primary for governor on May 19.

Comer is a native of Tompkinsville, where he runs a 950-acre cattle, timber and hay farming business. His campaign staff said he is currently leading in the four-way primary polls and has raised $1.3 million so far.

Since the candidate is from the first congressional district, he would like to see a boost in the coal mining industry.

“I want to improve the business climate and attract industry to Kentucky,” Comer said. “I want to do things to reform the tax code and reduce regulatory burdens on small businesses and recruit industry in Hopkins and Muhlenberg.”

Comer said he also plans to oppose the Obama administration’s regulations on the coal industry, which provides half the electricity generated in the state and keeps energy costs down.

“I can change Kentucky in one legislative session,” he said.
